It's been too long since I've last posted. For the past few months, I've been studying web design like crazy, but I couldn't just stay away from my studio.

So this is a big deal for me - these are honestly the first paintings that I would feel comfortable hanging in a gallery. They are full of technical imperfections, but they aren't as noticeable as with previous paintings. They aren't truly finished, but I feel really good about these pieces, and it's given me some much needed motivation and confidence to continue doing what I love.

May was a crazy busy month for me. Overtime, my girlfriend's graduation, and being sick for two weeks. Now I'm back at my desk, and I'm going to try something I've never done before: two paintings at one time. My teachers in college always recommended it, but I never took their advice. Will it be better than just one painting at a time? We'll see...

Taking a break

Every now and then, you get so caught up in the work you're making that you lose sight of how to be creative. I've been feeling stuck lately so I thought I would unwind and relax a bit. I bought a how-to book on cartoon animals and another on kodomo (kawaii) cartoons. It's really been helpful in letting me go back to the basics and just draw stuff for the fun of it.

So, here's my first post! I hope I can make these daily, but being a full time artist with a full time day job is hard to maintain. These sketches are some general ideas I'm throwing out for a series of paintings I'm scheduling for this summer. My goal is to have them completed by the end of august. That's quite a long time away, but I'm also working on two indoor murals and one large exterior mural for a radio station. Yikes...

So, for the past couple of years I have used this blog as temporary storage for my artwork. Once I had a formal website, I would begin to post daily stuff about what I'm currently working on. I'm glad to say that the day has finally come! You can go to www.daniellustration.com to see my artwork, and from now on I will be using this solely for daily studio updates. Yay!

A friend of mine is writing a book to give to her niece this september, and I'm illustrating it. I haven't read it yet, but I know that it's about an owl. I just finished this study today.

I realized that I hate the colors I used in my last post of this guy. I tried to calm it down a bit and make the colors more harmonious. I think this is waaaay better.

This piece is unfinished. I was working on Adobe Illustrator when it suddenly expired my trial use. I planned on really developing the background; maybe adding interweaving tubes attached to the figure's body. Maybe one day, when I actually get the program, I can finish it.

So I'm starting a business and I want to have samples of my process to display on the website. This photo was given to me by a friend.
I always start with establishing the contours and the darkest values. If you start with the darkest, you can use it as a reference point for the other values and saturation levels.

After I have established the darkest values, I move on to the middle ranges. It isn't supposed to look pretty at this stage - this is the underlying structure of the painting.

The next and longest phase is rendering. I try to do one apple at a time to stay focused and productive.

snowboard ideas

There is this company called Artic Love (www.articlove.com) that sells snowboard skins and uses a portion of the profit to donate to various charities. It seems like an awesome company. They could potentially accept some of my designs if they like them. Here is my first try at some of the ideas I had. Keep in mind that it isn't finished.

If you have not yet seen the 2012 London Olympics logo, then I suggest you check it out. Many people think it's awful. I read about the concept behind the logo and decided to see if I could come up with something better.

I found Ashley's piece the most intriguing. The brown-canvas-looking material seemed appropriate. She said that if the space permitted her, then she would want to put some on the floor or on shelves. I think it would be cool if she put the objects in a keg. It would be like pulling toys out of a toy box, yet kegs to us are symbols for decadence. That might be interesting.
